Today we have another installment for my advice series celebrating the launch of 101 Success Secrets for Gifted Kids: The Ultimate Guide.

Today’s guest: Author and GT advocate, Lisa Rivero

Lisa Rivero is the author of The Smart Teens’ Guide to Living with Intensity, A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Teens, and Creative Home Schooling (all published by Great Potential Press), and The Homeschooling Option (Palgrave Macmillan). She speaks regularly about giftedness at local and national conferences, and she is a board member of the national non-profit organization SENG (Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted).

Take it away Lisa:

If I could give a child one piece of advice for life, it would be not to be afraid to be friends with yourself. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be the one person who will be with right with you the whole way, and you can either view this person as an enemy or a friend. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself, and spend at least as much time encouraging yourself and giving yourself pep talks as you do criticizing yourself. Being your own friend doesn’t make you selfish, and you don’t have to be a perfect person to like yourself. In fact, understanding your strengths and weaknesses and accepting them all can be one of the most freeing decisions you can make and can actually help you to meet your goals. If you like yourself just as you are, even as you change from year to year, being always curious about the person you are and are becoming, you really can have a supportive friend for life.

Being your own friend – so important, right?
